The final race on the famous Mountain circuit of the 2008 Isle of Man TT proved the incredible duel everyone had hoped for.
It was John McGuinness who emerged victorious after a six-lap battle with Australian star Cameron Donald, who challenge faded on the final lap as the Relentless by TAS Suzuki machine developed mechanical problems.
The win means McGuinness is now tied for second most successful TT rider with the late, great Mike Hailwood, both on 14 wins.
Although McGuinness got a good start, he was put off his stride by Conor Cummins suffering an engine problem and throwing oil onto the front of the Padgett’s Honda.
Before the end of the first lap it was Kiwi Bruce Anstey who had claimed the lead, ahead of McGuinness and TAS teammate Donald.
Over the second lap he built that advantage, entering the bits with about five second in hand over Donald, who had moved up to second.
However, the first round of pit stops turned the race on its head. Anstey climbed of the Suzuki and retired with chain and clutch problems and Guy Martin, who was holding fourth on the Hydrex Bike Animal Honda, ground to a halt as he left the pits.
Martin managed to get the machine going again, but retired at Quarterbridge.
The retirements and a great stop by Padgett’s saw McGuinness head Donald by four seconds at Glen Helen on lap three.
Donald clawed back the time to take the lead at Ramsey, but was back in second, trailing by nearly three seconds, at the end of the lap.
Again, Donald set after McGuinness, bringing the gap down to just 0.56 seconds in Ramsey. Stunningly, he had a three second advantage at the Bungalow and led as they headed into the pits for the second and final pit stop.
For the whole of lap five it was all about Donald, who looked set for a third TT win in 2008. At one point he had a lead of almost seven seconds, although that had fallen to just under five by the end of the lap.
It looked like Donald had done enough, but at Glen Helen McGuinness had a 9.27 second lead. Donald was suffering mechanical problems and dropped further and further back and crossed the line down on McGuinness by more than 50 seconds.
It was enough for second place, as third-placed man Ian Hutchison was almost a minute further down the road.
Hutchy’s AIM Yamaha had been locked in a battle with Ryan Farquhar, on a Superstock machine, and a flying Gary Johnson. Once again, it was Hutchy’s AIM Yamaha teammate Steve Plater who put in the final surprise, moving up to fifth between Farquhar and Johnson at the line.
Speaking afterwards McGuinness said:
‘I’m lost for words. It was one of those races, probably the hardest race I have ever raced around here, certainly with a big bike.’
‘I enjoyed the race and gave it everything I had. All my years of experience went into that race, I couldn’t have done any more, I couldn’t have ridden any faster.’
‘I am really proud to win 14 and have 28 podiums, it’s great to equal Hailwood and be second equal overall.’
McGuinness also confirmed he has a deal to return to the TT in 2009 with Honda and hopes to take even more victories.
Donald said it was a ‘brilliant race’ and added:
‘I was feeling pretty good, the conditions were perfect for myself. It was a real race. I was working really hard and had everything going good, but when I crossed the line I saw some oil on my boots. But I thought it was still running okay and there was a big gap to third so I thought if I could bring it home that’d be okay.’
Already a winner twice at the 2008 TT, Donald said:
‘It has been an amazing week. To end up second in this one, especially to John, what can I say? It’s been an amazing TT.’
Hutchinson said his second podium of the week helped make up for some, but not all, of the disappointment of 2008.
‘When you win one you come here with one thing in mind, winnig another. But it hasn’t really gone that way for us.’
‘At least I have been able to pull something back from it.’
‘I was riding to what I could ride. I had very little time with the bike and was riding the best I could for the time I have had.’
The wizard of 'Aus'
Cloudy conditions in the Isle of Man didn’t stop the Scottish Life International Superstock TT being a blistering race.
At the end of four laps it was Australian Cameron Donald who took the win, his second ever TT victory coming just two days after he dominated the Dainese Superbike race.
Second was 13-times TT winner John McGuinness and third Guy Martin.
On lap one, McGuinness took an early lead at Glen Helen, but Donald was soon in control.
Over the Mountain section low-lying cloud led to some caution from the riders, meaning the standing lap record wasn’t threatened.
At the end of lap two Martin had taken third place away from Ryan Farquhar, who had set the fastest time in Superstock practice. Lap two saw last year’s Supertock winner Bruce Anstey retire in the pits.
Donald maintained his lead after the pit stops at the end of lap two, keeping the gap to McGuinness at about 17 seconds. On the last two circuits McGuinness pulled a couple of seconds back.
However, nothing could stop Donald taking his and team Relentless by TAS Suzuki’s second win of TT2008.
Speaking afterward he said:
‘This one everyone was in. The guys had a bit of bad luck on Saturday and I have got so much respect for John and Guy, this is just brilliant.’
‘The Suzuki just works so well. This is really special.’
McGuinness, on the podium for the 26th time at the TT, said:
‘I didn’t know what to expect with the Superstock bike. I have never really been a lover of them, but I’m getting to like them!’
‘The bike was brilliant and I may a good start. I was a bit cautious through the mist and dropped a bit of time.’
‘To finish second is just brilliant. The bike was a winner, it was me, I just wasn’t sharp enough.’
Third-placed Martin said:
‘No, I’m not happy with third, I wanted to win. I think I got the quickest lap on the last lap so it was the best of a bad job I suppose.’
‘I just kept plugging away and plugging away. I should have pushed a bit harder.’
‘Third, yeah I suppose I have to be happy enough. Mustn’t grumble.’
The Relentless Supersport Junior TT is due to start at 1.15pm.

Cameron Donald took his first ever TT win today with victory in the action packed and drama filled Dainese Superbike race. Riding the Relentless by TAS Suzuki, the Australian took advantage of the misfortunes of Guy Martin and John McGuinness to seize control at two thirds race distance and he came home just over ten seconds clear of team-mate Bruce Anstey, to make it a tremendous day for Hector and Philip Neill’s team. A perfect day for Suzuki was completed with Adrian Archibald finishing in third.
Australian Donald wins first TT in Dainese Superbike thriller
With bright, sunny weather bathing the Island, conditions were ideal for racing but their was confusion at the start and Guy Martin was delayed getting to the line. He missed his starting slot by almost 9 seconds before getting underway. Conor Cummins and John McGuinness were also delayed before everything got back on track and their delay clearly showed at Glen Helen as it was Ian Hutchinson who led from Donald, Anstey, Ryan Farquhar, McGuinness and Martin. However, as the lap progressed, Martin was getting into his rhythm on the Hydrex Bike Animal Honda and he took the lead with an opening lap of 129.103mph to lead McGuinness by almost 4 seconds with Donald, Anstey, Hutchinson and Farquhar not far behind.
The drama continued on the 2nd lap when McGuinness was late at Glen Helen but he eventually arrived, pulling in with a misfire. He got going again but the problem returned and he called it a day at Sulby Crossroads. Martin now had more breathing space and with a second lap of 129.540mph, the fastest of the race, his lead was up to over ten seconds. The Lincolnshire rider controlled the race from his signals until the 4th lap when he was reported as being missing at Ramsey Hairpin. News came through that he too had retired at Sulby whilst early pace setter Hutchinson was also out near Union Mills with Cummins following on the 4th lap at Keppel Gate.
The two TAS Suzuki’s were flying though, circulating together on the road and although Anstey tried to break away, he soon realized it was a forlorn task and he tucked in behind Donald for the rest of the race. The Aussie, in only his third TT, was lapping at the 129mph mark and the duo crossed the line almost together although it was Donald who prevailed over his Antipodean rival by 10.77 seconds with a new race record of 1hr 47m05.89s, 126.82mph. It was not only his first win, but also Australia’s first since Graeme McGregor won the 1984 Junior TT.
Archibald, 9th on the first lap, worked his way through the field with his fastest ever TT lap to finish 3rd, his first podium for three years, firmly silencing his critics. Gary Johnson, one of last year’s best newcomers, rode brilliantly on his Honda to take 4th with Ian Lougher finally getting the better of Farquhar, on his Superstock machine, for fifth.
Keith Amor took 7th ahead of an excellent ride by Dan Stewart in 8th with the top 12 being completed by Carl Rennie, Steve Plater, Mark Parrett and Les Shand. Incidents were reported for Stephen McKnight at the Bungalow and Thomas Shoenfelder at Sarah’s but neither was believed to be serious.
